How the service Works — Step-by-Step Guide 2025
Everything you need to know about using Deferit to split your household bills into 4 interest-free installments.
The Deferit Process — 4 Simple Steps
Create Your Deferit Account
Sign up at deferit.com or download the iOS app. Enter your basic information and connect your bank account or debit card. Deferit performs a soft credit inquiry to verify your identity — this does NOT affect your credit score. Most accounts are approved within minutes. New members start with a credit limit of $100–$400.
Upload Your Bill
Click "Upload a Bill" and take a photo of your bill, upload a screenshot, or attach a PDF file. You can pay virtually any household service bill: electricity, gas, water, phone, internet, cable, car insurance, medical bills, DMV registration, storage units, and more. Deferit works even if your biller only accepts checks — they'll mail a physical check on your behalf.
Choose Amount & Date
Select how much of the bill you want Deferit to pay (up to your credit limit) and the date you want it processed. You then pay your first installment (25% of the bill + $0.99 fee). Deferit immediately pays your biller the full selected amount on the date you specified.
Repay in 3 More Installments
Three remaining installments are automatically collected every 14 days. Each installment includes a $0.99 processing fee. You can reschedule payment dates if you need flexibility. All payments are reported to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion to help build your credit history.

How Payment Processing Works
Deferit can pay billers in multiple ways depending on how the biller accepts payment:
ACH Transfer
Direct bank-to-bank transfer. Fastest method — typically same day or next business day.
Credit/Debit Card
Deferit charges your biller's online portal directly using a virtual card.
Physical Check
For billers that only accept checks, Deferit mails a physical check. Allow 7–10 business days.
How Deferit Works — Questions
For online/ACH payments, Deferit typically processes same day or within 1 business day. Physical checks take 7–10 business days to arrive. Always factor in delivery time when setting your payment date.
If your bill exceeds your credit limit, the difference will be added to your first installment. For example, if your limit is $200 and the bill is $250, you'd pay $50 + $62.50 (first installment of $200) = $112.50 upfront.
Deferit does not charge late fees. However, missed payments may be reported to credit bureaus and could negatively affect your credit score. Contact Deferit support to reschedule if you're struggling to make a payment.
Yes! You can pay off your Deferit balance early at any time. There are no early repayment penalties. Early payment may also help increase your credit limit faster.

Behind the Scenes: How Your Bills Actually Get Paid
Understanding the back-end flow helps explain delivery timing, biller compatibility, and why certain bills process faster than others. Here's the full pipeline from your upload to the biller receiving payment.
Stage 1: Bill Capture and OCR
When you upload a bill image, optical character recognition extracts five core fields: biller name, account number, due date, amount due, and remit address. Accuracy is typically 95% or higher on standard biller formats. Less common billers — small municipal utilities, regional cable providers, niche medical providers — may require manual data entry, which adds about 12 to 24 hours to processing.
Stage 2: Biller Matching
The service maintains a database of approximately 5,000 pre-registered billers across the United States. Pre-registered billers receive electronic payments via ACH within one business day. New billers (those not in the database) are added on first submission, typically within 24 hours. Once added, future submissions to that biller process at the standard one-business-day pace.
Stage 3: Payment Delivery
Three delivery methods exist depending on biller capability: ACH electronic transfer (most common, same-day to next-day), physical check (slower, 3-5 business days, used for billers without ACH support), and biller portal direct payment (used for some major utilities and credit card companies, fastest at often under 12 hours). The platform automatically selects the fastest available method for each biller.
What Happens After Each Installment
Once your bill is paid to the biller, your four-installment schedule activates. Each installment touches several systems:
- Day 0: First installment debits from your linked bank account within hours of bill submission. Confirmation email arrives within minutes.
- Day 14: Second installment debits. A reminder notification arrives 48 hours prior.
- Day 28: Third installment debits. Same notification cycle.
- Day 42: Final installment debits. Account marks the bill as fully repaid.
- Days 30-60: Payment data uploads to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each bureau processes data on different cycles, so your credit report may show the activity at different times across the three.
Rescheduling and Hardship Provisions
Life happens. The service includes rescheduling options that most users don't discover until they need them. You can postpone any single installment by up to seven days at no cost, accessible from the bill detail screen in your dashboard. Rescheduling is limited to twice per bill — exceed that and the customer service team must intervene manually.
Beyond standard rescheduling, hardship deferment is available for documented job loss, medical emergency, or natural disaster. Users we surveyed reported that hardship requests typically receive a response within 24 to 48 hours via email. The team has discretion to extend installments by up to 30 days without affecting your credit reporting status.
Edge Cases Worth Knowing
Partial Bill Payments
You can submit a partial amount for any bill. For example, if you owe $400 but want to split only $300 through the service, you'd pay $100 directly to the biller and submit the remaining $300. The system handles partial submissions without issue, though some users report confusion when the biller's records show split payment sources.
Multiple Concurrent Bills
Most users start with one or two active bills, but the system supports multiple concurrent splits. Your total outstanding installment balance counts against your dynamic credit limit. If you have $800 in outstanding installments and a $1,000 limit, you can split up to $200 more in new bills before hitting your cap.
Bill Disputes With Original Biller
If you dispute a bill with the original biller after the service has already paid it, you're responsible for resolving the dispute directly. The platform will not claw back payments from billers on behalf of users — it functions strictly as a payment processor, not a dispute mediator. Disputed amounts must be repaid through your installment schedule regardless of dispute outcome.
